Item Definition Automation (IDA) is concerned with the capture and retention of each item that is assigned a SKU number, all data that uniquely describes the item from the retailer's and the vendor's perspective. The vendor item data is used for purchasing the item, organizing the item within the retailer's business and geographic structure, and for tracking the vendor performance. It includes:
Vendor name, address, telephone number, contacts, etc. ; The vendor stock/style number and UPC code; The item description including the color and size where applicable; The category under which the vendor classifies the item; The item price and the vendor's suggested retail price (MSRP); The pack configurations for the item; The type of label the item carries; The price carried by the label and the identity markings; The code of the item it replaces, if any and The code of the item it is replaced by, if any.
From the retailer's perspective definition requires:
The vendor number assigned by the retailer; The retailer's item price (the price can be different from the MSRP); The merchandising classification of the item, i.e. Division, Department, Class and Subclass. The geographic classification, i.e. the company, region, zone and store for which the item is intended. The assignment of a SKU number which uniquely identifies the item in the retailer's inventory.

Any enterprise with more than 10,000 SKU's in its inventory.
